About Y2 Varuna

Varuna was built in 1939, by George Andrews, in Christchurch New Zealand, and is still sailing. Varuna didn’t originally have a racing number and isn’t listed in YOD Yearbooks.

Home port: Auckland, New Zealand.

Engine: Kubota 17hp diesel

Good Condition: just routine touch ups needed as she was completely restored around 2006.

News, Oct 30, 2016:  We have just purchased Varuna, sail number Y2. She has been sitting on a mooring in Whangarei, New Zealand for a few years. She is currently on the hard getting ready to go back in the water today. We will sail her down to her new home in Auckland later this month.

Update Dec 1, 2016: a quick update on Varuna. Having come off the hard the engine blew as she was taken back to a mooring, so we have yet to sail down the coast.

We are delivering a new engine on Monday and with luck we will be back in action in a couple of weeks, and then get her down the coast.

Update from Barry Dreyer on October 12, 2017

Varuna did well down the coast – averaged about 7 knots on the longest 90 or so mile reach.

Update on January 21, 2019

We have just done a significant tidy up of her and re-launched.
