Y18's owner, Tom Clark is in the yellow slicker, dark hair & beard.
This is Y18, Madamoiselle, sailing on Lake-George around 1979. She was owned by Tom Clark of Burlington Vermont from the mid 70s through the mid 80s. A beautiful clear varnished hull, she was built in 1941 at the Nevins Boatyard in City Island NY.
We entered her in several PHRF races on Lake George and she won more than her share. In the photo above, I'd be willing to bet that I, on the helm, was beseeching Tom to free up the stubborn boom vang so I could drive her deeper to minimize the incipient broach.
She normally was so beautifully balanced and had a lovely graceful motion cutting easily through the chop. That balletic grace contrasted with the frantic need to free up the windward running backstay when we suddenly needed to jibe!
As I recall, Tom purchased her from Mr. Shearer in Shelburne. I am unclear as to who purchased her from Tom, but I heard an ugly rumor that she burnt in a boatyard fire on Shelburne years later. Hope that's untrue.
I'm Sarah, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to our brand-new YOD forum! I used to own Y36 Venture, but these days I'm sailing Y43 Gemini. I've been sailing all my life and have a deep-rooted passion for the Yankee One-Design class. I love delving into the history and mysteries of the YOD class, and I'm really happy to have this new forum for us to use. I look forward to connecting with old and new friends and chatting here. I grew up sailing on the Finger Lakes in upstate New York, so lake sailing holds a special place in my heart. I've been based in Seattle since 1994, where my wife, 13-year-old son, and I love to sail Gemini on Lake Union and Lake Washington. Beyond sailing, I build websites and write short stories. I'm excited to get to know each of you better and to share experiences, tips, and stories about our beloved YOD class. Please take a moment to introduce yourself; we'd love to hear from you! Fair winds and following seas, Sarah
