Venture 36

This page is reference for CWB instructors and staff members interested in sailing Venture. There are 3 levels of checkout.

1. Crew     Help rig, sail, and handle the dock lines. You can learn this in an afternoon's sail, and then be part of Venture's crew list. We always take out one experienced crew member for public sails and swizzles, and are grateful for the help. All CWB members and volunteers are welcome to join Venture's crew.

2. Skipper     Open to CWB sailing instructors and staff. The process of checking out as one of Venture's skippers includes: docking the boat in a North wind, a South wind, and during a stiff breeze. We will also do a few man-overboard drills. Skippers must have a checked-out crew member on board during program sails, to help with docking.

3. Singlehand        This level of checkout is for those who are cleared to sail the boat with no experienced crew on board.

It is the CWB policy that to remain checked out on Venture, a skipper must sail on the boat at least once a month. (There is no similar requirement for crew.)

If you would like to learn more about getting checked out on Venture, email Venture@3rdwave.net. If you live in the Seattle area but are not a member of the Center for Wooden Boats (CWB), it's easy to join. And for those who are experienced and enjoy teaching, there are always opportunities for volunteer sailing instructors at CWB.
