Flotsam 42

Flotsam, 1999   photo by Jim Foster

Flotsam was the last Yankee to be built. She was built in 1963 at the Alameda Boat Works by John Linderman, a profession boat builder, for his personal use. She was leased to Norman Clerk (family member through marriage and the father of Goeff and Brad Clerk) for a summer use. Flotsam was sold to Donald Jerome Keleher in 1973, and transferred to Donald James Keleher in 1999.

Flotsam has never required major restoration. She has simply always been well maintained and well loved.

David White, the Yankee One Design historian, puts Flotsam into proper context with this summary of the West coast Yankees.

Racing Notes: An Aeolian Story: One Of Those Days

This series was taken by Jim Foster during an Aeolian Yacht Club race, partly in San Francisco central bay, and in SF south bay, in July 1999.

My father, (Don Keleher) in the white hat, was captain, with my sister (Angel Keleher) and my self in the orange float coat (Don Keleher) as crew.

In San Francisco Bay, the winds routinely blow at 20 knots or more; precisely the conditions that Yankees were designed to race in. (That's Flotsam, to the right.)
